Howdy Dennis
In my experience, they are not necessarily prone to cracking so I imagine someone
forgot the antifreeze. Coincidentally, in the space of the last three weeks I've had
two guys call with 40's with cracked blocks. One fellow found one, true standard bore
even (!), for $350 which I felt was a good deal. Quite a few years ago now I had an
NOS block and pistons, fellow drove all the way to Colorado from the deep south to
pick it up.
Cylinder heads are another situation altogether. They are prone to cracking, in fact
it's pretty darn common. Aftermarket heads work fine so it's not a big deal if yours
is cracked and can't be welded.
Good luck
Greg
