Dean, thanks for the reply. It sounds like the best way is to swap with a
good coil and see what happens.

Dick:
About all you can determine with a VOM on a coil is whether it is open or
completely shorted. Use the lowest resistance reading you have on the VOM
since the coil will measure 0.6 to 1.5 ohms depending on its application. If
it has high resistance the coil has developed a break in the wire somewhere.
Unfortunately you won't be able to tell if a few coils are shorted together
since one doesn't know the exact dc resistance it should be. So about all
you will really learn is that it isn't completely shorted or open. Also it
takes good batteries in your VOM to read fairly accurately. Most inexpensive
VOM's don't read low resistance all that well. Another thing you could run
into is a coil that has an internal resistor for use in a 12 V system but
runs at 6V.

Is there a way to test a 6-volt coil using a meter? If so, what meter
settings would I use when testing it?
Thanks
