We had an IH mower on a Super C for over 20 years and we cut hundreds,
maybe thousands, of acres of hay with it. Don't remember the model, but it
was an A-frame with a single pivoting wheel in back and a cable from the
touch-control system on the tractor to the mower lifted the knife. Other
than the ability of a balanced-head mower to operate at virtually any
angle, people in our area felt that the pitment mowers woked much better
for cutting hay, especially in shorter grass or tangled crop. The
reason? Pitment mowers vibrate a lot more than a balanced head
mower. This vibration would tend to shake the grass off the cutter bar and
also shake tangled crops over the cutter bar. Today, the smoothness of the
mower does not matter as the reels with teeth on the haybines of today keep
the cutter bar clean.
