THAT'S IT!  Check the bark and you'll see evidence of larva runs all
over the back side of it.  The borer effectively girdles the tree and it
dies in a matter of days.

Greg how do the trees die. I ask because we have some ash on our
property 
and last year in the spring they had leaves then about mid summer died
and 
the leaves fell off. Looked healthy other wise. I have one now that the 
bark looks to be falling off in places.
