It starts with crown die-back, then spreads to the rest of the tree.
You may also see sucker growth on limbs that are not completely dead.
Close inspection will reveal the bore holes where the adults have
emerged
from the tree.  Slipping bark is typical.  There's lots of info on the
net - google "emerald ash borer".

Greg how do the trees die. I ask because we have some ash on our
property and last year in the spring they had leaves then about mid
summer died and the leaves fell off. Looked healthy other wise. I have
one now that the bark looks to be falling off in places.
