I've found the most common cause of shimmy is the steering shaft
thrust bearing. Take the cover that looks like a pipe plug on the
front of the steering gear box off, and you can remove the steering
shaft. It must be seperated at the forward universal joint. I'll
bet the bearing in there is worn. Take the numbers off it and get a
new one at your nearest auto parts store or industrial bearing supply.
