I just bought an Acer via Tiger Direct for $499, after the !@)(% $50 rebate, for my wife. It's light, has a wide 15.4" screen, DVD player, wireless and AMD Sempron (sp?) 3100 processor. It's downside is limited battery life, about 1 hour. I think I could get a better battery for $50, but she would still have to plug it in sometime anyway.

I got a Dell for one of the sons last year and I have a dell at work. My work dell has 1000's of "miles" and shows it, but still works. It does have a rub on the screen from the keytops, if I get another one, I'll cut a piece of heavy felt to keep between the keys and screen.

For picture reteneion, I'd burn at least 2 copies to CD or DVD and keep them in seperate places, in addition to the laptop. I think this one had a 60 or 80G hard drive, will that be enough? If not, look at something like a Iomega network drive for your wireless network. I use one for backup.
