As far as the industrial stuff, it's a little more complex but for
beginners, the Rabbit series seems to be pretty well recommended.

I use a lot of Microchip parts but that's because I have a number of
contacts that design the chips over there. Contact me off-list and I
can get you a lot more information if you're interested. I know I have
a development board around here someplace that I started with.
     I design the system, write (or have a programmer write) the code
and test it before I build a board, in many cases. Boards only take a
few days to get built and the cost is constantly dropping for them. So
I see "homemade" repairs in the future, even for things like tractor
electronics (tractor reference). The learning curve is a lot less
steep and getting easier all the time.
