Hi Greg
Thanks for your comments re: my webpage.
I have a couple more pics taken today as I was cutting grass in an old yard
using the 730 Case and my Farm King 6 foot rotary mower. This brings up my
question. When I checked the gearbox on this mower after a couple hours work
it was so hot I could not hold my hand on it. Checked the oil and it was
pretty well empty. Apparently the lower seal on the output shaft has leaked
the oil out. I put in almost a quart of #30 motor oil which was all I had on
hand at that location . Figured even the wrong kind of oil is better than no
oil at all. I worked another hour and finished but the gearbox was pretty
hot again.
I'm wondering if rather than replacing the seal right away I could maybe
pump grease into the box through the level plug, or replace it with a grease
fitting? I suspect it would not be sufficient lubrication though and I'll
likely have to do a disassembly to replace this gearbox seal.
Any opinions, advice, experience with this type problem is welcome.
Ralph in Sask.
