[Steam-engine] heating surface

I most likely should have payed closer attention in math class, but no one ever taught it as it applies to steam engines.  (what a great idea!)  anyhow does anyone care to educate me on the heating surface of a tube?  It is 2" in diameter and 45 inches long.  I keep getting interesting answers.... but am not sure they are right.
