I kind of thought that was what you were referring to , so , yes , you can 
unspin or unlock the drive if you have a bench grinder with a wire wheel on 
it . It is very easy and simple , put the bendix against the wire brush , 
put a little pressure onto the starter so the bendix spins fast and just 
like magic , it will pop back into its normal position . Have done it many 
times and has NEVER failed to work for me .

if you spin( extract) the drive it can be near impossible to install the
starter   You cannot un spin the drive
