Early this year I wrote an enthusiastic post about
actually assembly something for the Huber instead of
taking something apart when I put the lubricators back
together. I was on vacation all of last week due to
the annual plant shutdown and got a little more done.
When I started the week I had little more than a
stripped boiler and a big pile of parts. Now, all of
the gearing is in place and the back wheels are on it
for the first time in almost 2 years. The cylinder
has been put back on and the crank lifted into place.
The piano wire has been strung indicating the center
of the cylinder so that the new crank bearings can be
poured. The wire shows the crank to be almost 1/4"
low. I hope that the timing on the Woolf reverse
works out OK after raising the crank. Pouring the
crank bearings is the only big task left to do before
the engine can be fired. almost all of the remaining
parts have been painted and are ready for assembly.
Wayne Metzger is nearly finished with the governor and
a friend Norm Klueg made me a great deal on making a
new flywheel key. All of the plumbing has been
aquired and waits assembly. The smokebox breeching is
well on its way to being assembled the the new fire
door is ready to put on. Since the the back wheels
are now on it was safe to pull the front axle for
paint and to remove sand left from blasting. I need
to locate a large spring for the front. The original
spring is coil spring about 4.25" O.D. x about 3"
tall. The spring was made from 1" square stock. I'm
pretty excited that the little Huber will be running
soon though not complete. The call of the whistle is near!
