[Steam-engine] Fusible Plugs

    When you buy a fusible plug, look for the ASME STD stamp on the fusible 
metal.

    Last year, a company started selling plugs without this stamp.  They are 
much less expensive but the Minnesota and Wisconsin chief boiler inspectors 
have both issued notices stating that, if found, these plugs must be 
removed.  The Minnesota chief even went so far as to request that once one 
of these plugs is removed, it be destroyed.

    These plugs are refrigeration plugs and were initially stamped UL. 
Underwriters Laboratories has issued a statement saying that they have not 
tested, and will not test, these plugs for use in boilers.  These plugs do 
not comply with the ASME specifications for metallurgy, dimensions, or 
manufacturing procedures.
