Kevin:
Since I know that the general ATIS has an "All Color" orientation, I thought
I would provoke a little bias into the equation! I was primarily stoking
Walt a little about his interpretation of the value of a 530. What I was
seriously trying to communicate is that the 530 has a relatively high
perceived market value within the JD collecting community. That doesn't
necessarily make it better than any other brands of collector tractor. Just
communicating a market fact. And I can list, but won't here, what those
reasons are and they really don't have anything to do with its perceived
superiority over any other brand of tractor.
In fact if one studies the 30 series JD history at all, you will find out
that whole series was never supposed to exist. The reason the 1959 and 1960
30 series two cylinder tractors were even built and sold was because the
development and announcement of the replacement 4 & 6 cylinder New
Generation JD tractors was delayed 2 years. There are very few real
enhancements to performance on the 30 series over the 1958 20 series. Mostly
the changes were all cosmetic. But the 30 series is the last of the two
cylinders and it causes a special place in the JD collectors pecking order.
I use the VHS vs Beta Video format example as one that can be compared to.
The buying market determines the products success. Not necessarily whether
one is truly better than the other.
So you have responded to my somewhat "tongue in cheek" provocation and that
was anticipated. Each brand of tractor has their positive attributes and
competitive advantages that can be promoted and rightfully so. I suspect
most of us collect and own those tractor brands that we worked with and
liked when we were much younger.
The only time I've seen that concept really violated are those who are into
serious competitive pulling. Then in most cases, winning is the only
selection criteria!

Dean How you figure that,(just goes to show you that any JD even if it is
covered with pigeon poop is
worth more than any other tractor) I just about rather have the pigen crap
an $4400 still in my pocket.
We have had JD tractors in the past A, 2Bs, Rdiesel w ponystarter. and they
are long gone an I am glad of it. When I want to use a tractor I dont want
to go through the crap involved with starting the @%7*!+& things But
everyone has their favorites So enjoy the green an I will try to stay with
the red ones. An occasional orange once or twice
