The implement you describe is called a "slip" here in the South.  We used one behind a tractor growing up also as early on Dad did not have a 3 point tractor nor a dirt scoop to use on one.  
It was my job first to run the JD A and pull the slip, but when I got big enough, the roles were reversed.
