Charlie,
Think of it as water in  a pipe. you can't see it you know its there because 
the pressure gauge says it  is.
1. Pressure = Amps
2. volume = volts. 

1000 volts no amps safe  as can be
1 volt 1000 amps your dead.

Water
3 in line no pressure  it won't hurt you
1 in line 300 lbs pressure your dead again. 

I have  always thought that this helps other to understand electricity  
better.

Then there is this 1 volt equals 160.000.000.000.000   electrons to pass a 
given point.  I always wonder who counted them to make  sure.
