Because it was quality built in  America.  Also it used older technology.  
Some of the newer smaller  motors are throw away junk. That motor can be rebuilt 
unlike most newer smaller  motors.  It would likely cost more however to 
rebuild, than just buying one  of the newer smaller "junk" motors.
