[AJD] 1950 AR Manifold Snag...

         I tried loosening the radiator,  and air cleaner mounts,  I also even loosened the carb a bit to see if I could wiggle everything together,  but when that still did not work I thought I was setting myself up to break the ear off a barb or something like that.  The 71 and 72 are identical as far as I know,  with the exception of the economiser plug in the 72.   If I had to guess I would say that the manifold's larger size pushes the carb forward about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch.  The carb.  intake elbow is much smaller in diameter on the A compared to the AR,  so I am guessing that is part of the reason I am having trouble.   I do recall having the exaust stack like up a little funny on the as for similar reasons,  but it was easily workable.  I am just going to swap the manifold over to the 48 A HC and use the manifold I was having repaired for it on the AR. 
   
        I now know that it is better to repair the broken eared manifolds rather than replace them.  $35 for the one that is being fixed now.  But it is a nice manifold otherwise.   
   
         I am hoping to have both the AR and the A HC at the mall in february,  but we'll see what the wife thinks about that..  The navy claims they will have her home for the weekend,  so for now it's a mad dash to get the house cleaned....

Hmmm, I sure wouldn't expect the reproduction manifold to be that much
different. I understand why they would increase the thickness of the flange
but that could be accomplished while still allowing the mating surface to be
in the same place. Don't know about the differences between DLTX 71 and 72
carburetors either. The key to successful troubleshooting is to make only
one change at a time. :-)

Are you sure the AR frame didn't shrink due to all our rain? :-) 1/4"
doesn't seem like it would cause an interference fit with the rubber hose as
part of the equation. Seems like it would flex enough to allow it to fit. Is
it possible that the mounting tolerances of the radiator, air cleaner, etc
just haven't added up to make an interference fit? 

I don't have any answers I guess, just questions, but maybe one will trigger
something.

I got home from San Diego early this morning, and
when it was not raining when I woke up, there was
only one thing to do, go play with the tractors..

I wanted to finish plumbing the air cleaner into
the 1950 AR to see if my carb would run right with
everything hooked up. I finally broke down and went
to JD to get the proper 2 5/8" hose I needed to
connect the elbow from the carb to the air cleaner. 
But, the elbow would not fit, it hits hard against
the air cleaner with the top bolt hole (elbow to carb)
about 1/4 inch off. 

Two things are different from when the tractor
was together (I think, the motor was disassembled
with I bought it) I changed from a DLTX-72 to a 71, 
and I put an aftermarket manifold on it, as there was
not one with it.

I have heard many bad things about aftermarket
manifolds, true, it does not look exactly like the
original, but when you don't have one, and deere
can't see you one, that repro looks pretty nice... I
used one on a 1948 A and it worked great! The only
thing I can figure is that the reproduction manifold
'looks' like it is a little 'bigger' than an original.
By bigger I mean that it appears that maybe the
flange that the carb bolts up to is thicker, and
maybe protrudes a little further twords the radiator
than the original as well. This made no different on
the A, but apparently the tolerances are a little
closer under the AR hood. I have an original manifold
being repaired that I should be able to pick up
thursday on my way home from work, so I hope that
this solves my problems. I really didn't want to have
to tear the tractor down that far again just yet, but
those are the breaks I guess. I'll just put that
reproduction manifold on the other 48 A that I was
planning on putting the repaired mainfold on.
