When I redid my 70 radiator more broke off than not.. I ended up using the
wire welder, with a bag of new bolts.. I welded the nuts to the broken
studs. Between the heat of the wire welding and new surfaces to grip
everyone came out real easy..

Tommy:

I'm sorry to hear you are having such problems with your radiator bolts. I
was the culprit who brought up the Hansen set here and have received my set
but have not had a chance to use them yet.

If you recall I mentioned that I had had very poor luck removing broken
bolts with EZ-Outs (Never-Outs) and had read those on the list who had
better luck with left hand drills. They even had some come out just drilling
using the left-hand drill. I have not yet had that luck and mentioned that
"Hell would probably freeze over first!" I purchase the 35 piece set to see
if it might improve the odds a bit. My expectations are fairly low but I
never expected 100& success either.

In my limited experience using right hand drill bits and "Never-Outs" I have
only had one success which was so surprising to me I took the day off to
celebrate. :-) I have learned though that it is sometimes obvious that a
bolt is so rusted and decayed and so chemically and physically bonded that
the chances of getting it out are going to slim to none using mechanical
means. In those cases I have drilled them out with the largest possible bit
w/o ruining the threads and melting the rest out with a torch. I have also
learned that one must not be too conservative in how much heat is applied.
The remaining part must get hot enough to change color to facilitate
possible removal. If it gets hot enough, the bond will be disturbed.
Repeated application of heat also improves the odds. If one is very careful
applying heat the bolt will melt before damaging the cast iron threads since
its melting point is slightly higher. It is a fine line to walk however.

I've come to the conclusion I'll never be 100% successful but any success is
better than none. If it was easy the threaded inserts (Heli-Coil) probably
wouldn't have been invented. I also have had a few successes just drilling
out the threaded hole to a few sizes larger, inserting a bolt and then
drilling and tapping that bolt down back to the original size. Lots of ways
to skin the cat.

Hope you have better luck in the future.

Well, the broken bolts on the top and bottom of the radiator of my AR
have been eating my lunch. Well, they're not so much broken as just
rusted away to the point that there was a nut left to take off. I
broke an easy out in one and broke a left hand drill bit in another.
But I did get one out! So I decided to go ahead and order the 35
piece set from Northern that was talked about here just after
Christmas. They came in this afternoon so I went to the shop after
supper. For a 5/16" bolt it says to drill a 3/16" hole the use the
3/16" extractor. I heated the piece with the torch thinking it might
help break the "rust bond". Drilled the 3/16" hole then put the 3/16"
extractor in. It promptly lifted the steel out leaving a slightly
larger than 3/16" hole. So I took the next size larger bit and then
the next size larger extractor. Guess what? It rung off! Now I have
an easy out in one hole, a drill bit in one hole and an extractor in
yet another hole. Hope you guys have better luck with this set. So
far I'm not too impressed.
