[AJD] ring and pinion gear

Merle:

We have a tough balance to strike. We would like to have parts available
when we need them, salvagers need to make a profit but we can afford to put
only so much into a tractor. I don't really know what a salvager has to get
for parts to break even over the price of a purchased parts tractor plus the
labor to part it out, plus inventory $ cost but.... I've not met too many
salvage yard owners who were poor.

We have a huge Salvage yard in Nampa, ID call Nampa Tractor Parts that has
building after building loaded with salvaged parts plus a yard full of
tractors and castings. I've been able to strike a reasonable deal with Jim,
the owner, on just a very few occasions but on many occasions the prices
just don't compute. I don't know how long he has been in business but he
confided in me that his total inventory is paid for and also has a large
personal collection of JD Tractors, accessories and implements. Not very
many businesses can say their total inventory is free and clear.

I've been able to find a few salvage yards that still sell parts at a price
I can handle. But in many cases I have just resorted to buying parts
tractors to get the parts I need and then selling off the rest on eBay at
whatever price the bidders are willing to pay. In some cases I think my
parting out labor was about $0.30 and hour. But it is better than nothing.
:-)

I just haven't found a better way to get stuff at a reasonable price. When a
starter and mounting bracket costs more than many parts tractors combined it
just doesn't make sense. However, one must have available free labor and an
understanding wife during the part out. I parted out a 39 B this summer and
was a bit surprised at how much work it took to get the transmission/rear
end gears out. If they had been worn out or with broken teeth I would
probably have left them in. But they were pristine so I stuck with it.

Well, he has the parts alright. I needed a starter and bracket for an "H"
and he qouated $400. Got rebuilt from Emison with bracket-rebuilt for $125.

I don't mind paying what it's worth but hate paying a premium because it's a

rather scaarce item.
