You'd be surprised at how dry dead grass can be in muddy ground. Especially when the wind is blowing. The mis-conception that it won't burn is a leading cause of grass fires caused by innocently set fires intended to burn brush piles etc.

...INCREASED FIRE DANGER THIS AFTERNOON FOR THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS...
VERY DRY CONDITIONS WILL PREVAIL THIS AFTERNOON. THE LOW HUMIDITY...OF
BETWEEN 10 AND 20 PERCENT...WILL RESULT IN AN INCREASE IN FIRE
POTENTIAL. WINDS OF 8 TO 14 MPH ARE ALSO A CONCERN. WEATHER CONDITIONS
THAT SUPPORT INCREASED FIRE DANGER WILL ALSO OCCUR SATURDAY. SUSTAINED
WIND SPEEDS OF 12 TO 18 MPH ARE EXPECTED AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING COLD
FRONT SATURDAY AFTERNOON. THESE STRONG WINDS...COMBINED WITH THE LOW
AFTERNOON HUMIDITY... WILL RESULT IN AN INCREASE IN FIRE DANGER. PLEASE
ADVISE THE APPROPRIATE OFFICIALS AND FIRE CREWS IN THE FIELD OF THIS
FIRE DANGER STATEMENT.
I'll take them at their word but the ground is so muddy it's sloppy :)
Ground is so muddy and soft that I have been pulling some wild rose
bushes this afternoon using my JD 2010 with a loader bucket and a heavy
rollover type box scrape for some weight in the rear.
Windy yes, but I'll bet you couldn't keep a fire going (unless you are a
Dotson - lol).
