Despite the problems of juries, they are a good first line of defense against
a tynanical government.
While on the subject, I want to mention one that that hopefully will not
apply: Jury Nullification. The judge and lawyers do not want you to know
this, and will not tell you. However when you are on the jury it is your
right to judge the law as well as the crime. You MUST refuse to convict
someone who is guilty of violating an unjust law.
Do not mention to anyone around the court room that you know about this until
your are debating the evidence with the other juries, and you think the law
itself is bad. If the lawyers find out you know about this before hand
they will remove you from the trial. (They should not, but they will) Once
you are debating the evidence they can do nothing. (A judge does not have
to inform you of this right, so there is no reason you should inform the
judge that you know)
Hopefully it will not come up. Despite the faults, overall our government
does a good job. However just in case you should know.
