[AT] Help with a Drag Harrow

Thanks to all who replied.

In looking over the brochure my local Farm & Ranch store gave me, it lists 
other uses for a drag harrow, such as Riding Ring maintenance (my wife has a 
riding arena), pasture renovation, root aeration and as a way to get 
fertilizer and herbicide into the ground.

So, I think I'll take your advice and see if I can find one at a farm sale.

Any multiple-generation farming operation will have a few harrow sections
either in occasional use or in the grove someplace.  They sell for iron
prices at local auctions around here.  Any way you could get introduced to
someone in the local farming community who could loan/rent/give/sell you a
section cheap?  If you were in my neighborhood I'd fix you right up, I saved
a couple of sections when we dismantled the folks' farm.

    I am the ultimate city-slicker, so please bear with me.
    This spring, we will be seeding about an eighth of a mile of a wide
ditch.  I've been told that after seeding that I should run a drag harrow
over the seed bed to help cover the seed.  Unless I can find another use for
this harrow, I'll probably never use it again.
    The prices range anywhere from nearly $200 to $500 for a 4-foot drag
harrow.  I've never seen one before but looking at the pictures, it's hard
for me to imagine that  there is enough material there to justify that kind
of cost.  It looks like a section of chain link fence.
    Has anyone ever made one? Can it be made for less than the price of a
manufactured one?
