I was tuning a big 6 cylinder GMC once. I  usually just grab the  spark plug 
wires and pull them then put the new ones  in, after there is only one way you 
can do it right.  Wrong the last guy  had put the distributor in 180 out and 
the rewired the plugs to work.  When  I hit the starter it let out a big bang 
that shook the whole shop. 
You just  can't trust what others have done.
