Chris:

That is unfortunate. At least you have another tractor to use it on. Some
days are better than others! Glad to hear your wife is home safe and sound.

Astories...

Today that Aw Crap award goes to me. The wife has
been home long enough now that I found time to sneak
away to work on the old JD's.

Of all the projects I have going, I thought I
would work on the 1948 A Hi Clearance that I bought
from Dean.. This tractor had thrown a rod, breaking
the piston and engine block. Once that was discovered
Dean sold me a block that came from a parts A a mutual
friend of ours had. I took that block, had it
magged and bored 90 over.

The moment of truth came, I slid the 'new' block
into the frame.. What the... Why won't the bolts line
up..??? You guessed it, wrong block.. I had
forgotten that the late A and Early 60 blocks have a
different bolt parttern to mount them to the main
case. I never even checked to see of the block I was
getting from Dean was the same, I just assumed..

Fortunately I had taken the old block to the
cast iron repair guy, and it was sitting in my garage
waiting for me to get to boring it. So now it's at
the machine shop getting bored to 45 over.

You would think with all the A's I have (36 AO,
36 AR, 41A, 45A, 48A, 48AHC, 50AR, 51A, and a few
parts A's) I would have known about that block
change.. Oh well.. I am now certain that the 51A is
going to get rebuilt now, I alread have the block
and pistons ready!!

                    Chris
