When a new model was introduced, it was often the case that the "plain
vanilla" versions were the first out with the oddball versions added after
production got started. Consequently, the special versions of the prior
model would sometimes remain in production a bit later than the regular
production. If you crack open Guy Fay's Data Book, you can see this with
the Super MTA. His book gives these dates for discontinuing the model:
Super MTA 10/15/54
Super MDTA 11/1/54
Super MVTA 12/2/54
Super MDVTA 1/25/55
So the 30 built in 1955 were evidently all Diesel High Clearance trectors.
January 25 is pretty early in the year. So most of the castings on these
tractors were probably Z codes, but a few A codes would have clearly been
possible. If they were tractors that required some separate fitting after
being built (as you speculated may have been required for propane tractors)
an A casting would be unlikely.

. . .
One of the items that I was surprised to learn from the information that
they sent me was, that they show (30)1955 Super MTA's being made. My
understanding was the MTA's were only made in 1954. Were these 30 tractors
maybe late 1954 model's? I would guess that if some were made for 1955,
would the casting code dates reflect a different letter, other than the Z
casting code?
