[Farmall] when is "too far gone"?

Folks-
  Seriously....how does one determine (that is to say  "practically"/"economically sound") when an I/H is just plain too far  gone to bother trying to remedy?  M's, H's, 340U are available to  me, but they are pretty sorry.
