John,

I don't believe a compression check will tell you if you have a bad valve guide..... Most oil is sucked in during the intake stroke, which the compression check does not measure.

As you know you are either sucking it up from the rings, down from the valve guide, or through a crack ....

You say it was an expert valve job, did you replace the valve guides, or check them for wear? Were they tight?

I have never done exactly what I am about to suggest, and you and others may not deem it safe, but what if you took the valve cover off, started it up and shot a very short burst of either on the intake valves in question? If the engine increased its speed it would tell you that you surely have a valve stem problem.... I have shot either around suspected intake manifolds and detected leaks... again, not the safest procedure.... Just a suggestion, but try at your own risk.....

Did you examine all of the cylinder walls for scoring while you had it apart? Could be that a gouge one the bottom of the cylinder wall is letting the oil come in.....

Regards,

Will Powell
