Y'know, a plain old ordinary gauge glass does work pretty fair. If it's
close by, I use a shield of either hardware cloth, or the thinner
expanded metal. When it breaks, turn off the bottom valve first to get
rid of all the hot water splashing around.
I like keeping it simple.
If glass is available with the white and red stripes on one side, that
works okay, but a meniscus is hard to miss in the open on a traction
engine. It's indoors in physical plants that used to be dark dingy
places that needed lighted gauge glasses, and special stuff to improve
visibility when the Engineer cared to look up from the novel he was
reading... ;-)
