I've had no experience with orange mowers, just yellow and green ones but 
I'll take a guess.
Is there a safety switch that doesn't allow it to crank with the deck in 
gear? Maybe in your haste to shut it down you didn't disengage the deck? 
This is assuming it threw the drive belt for the transmission and not the 
deck.

True story. Dad used to work for an IH dealer. He went to pick up a Cub 
Cadet one time that wouldn't do anything when you turned the switch. He 
decided to try to crank it himself before winching it on the trailer. When 
he cut the key switch on he heard the electric clutch engage...... I never 
heard him say if they billed for a service call or not.
