It is called Cathodic Protection. Pipe lines, storage tanks etc. use this. 
Also they make a sack with something like magnesum in it with a wire 
attached that you attach to a pipe or tank. All the corrosion goes to the 
sack(anode). Also your  water heater has one in it. Put a couple of copper 
pennys near the posts on your battery,and they will corrode ,not your 
battery terminals.
