There are several materials that would possibly work better, depending on
the size of the crack. One product that comes to mind in a black rubber
sealer "Super Stretch" which is used for sealing around windows and door
frames. It adheres real well and is somewhat workable. It will expand and
contract with the original material on the steering wheel so it won't chip
out and have to be redone. Depending on how faded the original material is,
you may not have to do any painting of the steering wheel.

The thing to keep in mind is getting a good bonding surface for whatever
you use. Clean all surfaces well to ensure good adhesion. You may want to
take an old tooth brush and brush whatever material you're using unto the
surface to make sure you get total and good surface contact before filling
in the crack. If the original coating is thick enough, you may want to try
undercutting it to get a better grip.
