[AT] another question; M Farmall starter

Good morning ATIS! Say, only 5 messages waiting for me on the list this
morning (24 hour period of time). Is traffic way down? Or are we having
a problem on our end?

And does anyone have an update on Cecil (NY state member)?

We spent a week on a farm outside of Haliday, ND this summer and as
always spent as much time helping out the family farming as possible.
Hauled a load of lentils. Beautiful country.

My Father in Law has both M and MD tractors, and I've overhauled the
starters on both of them over the years. While they are a little ways
away
from me, I do get down there 2-3 times a year. If you can send me a
good
pic, especially of the left side, of the engine I can make an educated
guess
what you have. There's quite a bit more to the MD engine, it had an
extra
combustion chamber that ran on spark plugs and gas to start it, then
when
things warmed up just a little you would cut it over to diesel. The MD
was
notorious for cracked heads, although if you idled the engine for a bit
to
let it cool down before shutting it off I understand that helped a lot.
These units are around, I think a used starter would be available, if a
little pricey. I was in a junk yard near Des Moines maybe 3 years ago
and
they had at least a couple of MD's on the lot.

Hey guys

Ran across another machine; supposed to have an M Farmall diesel engine
in
it. Since I’ve never fooled with old Farmall I wouldn’t know if it is
or
not by looking. The starter is totally missing; owner says it went out
&
they let a guy have it to rebuild it & never saw him or the starter
again.
Anyone got a starter off a tractor that can send me some identifying
info
(bolt pattern, distance between bolts, shaft/bendix length, etc) and
even
digital pix would help! IOW something so I can maybe look at the hole
where
the starter goes & make an educated guess if that’s the starter for it.
Email addy is bee_keeper at grandecom dot net in case it don’t come
through.
Back channel reply is fine!

Thanks!
