Sometimes it can even be a good thing.  I got a good buy on my 3 cylinder M 
that the previous owner gave up on.  He had done a lot of work and changed a 
lot of small parts in an attempt to get it running right.  I straightened 
the push rod and made it a 4 cylinder M.  :-).
