At the university, I was in charge of a graduate program in Industrial
Management for nearly 15 years. During that time, we developed a number
of new courses and added them to the program. As is customary, there is
a convention that is supposed to be followed so that if you know the
course number and the significance of each digit, you can tell what
level it is, the semester and frequency with which it is offered, which
specialization it is associated with, etc. The abbreviation for the
department is IM so by following all the rules we ended up with a course
numbered IM 666. We didn't think anything of it until we couldn't get
any students to enroll in it, and much to our consternation we couldn't
even get a faculty member to agree to teach it. After a few years of
significant lack of success with the course, we finally had it taken out
of the catalog.

I was in a store one day. The clerk rang up the total for the guy in

front of me. It came to $6.66. She freaked out and begged him to buy
something else so she could change the total. She said she was afraid
to
open the cash drawer on 666. He bought a pack of cigarettes. Wouldn't
have
believed it if I hadn't seen it myself.
