If you are unconformable tapping the rocker arms over the valves, You can
probably push them open, Try it on one where the push rod is lose.
You probably will want a small piece of wood or similar to push against. I
have placed the end of a hammer handle on the rocker arm and pushed on the
hammer head with both hands and open valves. If you can do it o a few it
will show you the force needed on the others. If one sticks open oil it,
if one sticks and will not open, oil it and tap it and try again.

JH-
I believe that you are correct. The rods at #1 must have
been compressed and, therefore, exhibit that "stiffness" as
described. While I would rather that it not be the case, I am beginning
to think that, ultimately, I will have to pull the head. This is a heavy
and time consuming chore, but it looks as if I (or someone with better
skills and experience) will have to do this (Dammit!).
I will let you know what transpires.
