Chris:

I have just reviewed JD's Parts Catalog Covering Wheels dated November 1,
1947, Document # F219. Some rather interesting info in it regarding front
and rear rubber tired wheels for the 1939 B.

Front RIMs

Part Number Description

AB1023R Disk & Rim(for 5.50 x 15 tire)
JD1262R Disk & Rim(reversible)(For 5.50 x 15" tire)

No mention of a 5.00 x 15" tire

Rear Rims

The 36" rears are only mentioned when used with the Spoked type rear wheels
or for Demountable Rim AB1452R which I assume was used only with cast
centers. I haven't figured out what cast center that is used with yet.

But.........

I better go out to the barn tomorrow and check the tire sizes on my three 39
and 40 B's. It troubles me that this document only mentions 5.50 x 15 tires.

Hold the tire order! :-)

Chris:

I noticed the 36" rear wheel thing too, when I looked the tire size up. I
was too lazy to go out to the barn and look at the three sets I have here
but I do remember the front small sizes that are on mine. I've got two 1940
Slant dash B's here and I parted out the 39B and they all have 38" rears.
But referring to JD's Dir No 249 dated 12-42 Instructions and Parts List it
only refers to 36" rears. I had never noticed that particular detail before.

I have a secondary printing 6 x 9", Yellow and Green, Operator's manual here
(OM-R2005) for B's Ser # 60000 to B201000) and it very clearly states 5:00 x
15" 4-ply rubber tires. Interestingly this same manual only mentions 10-38"
4-ply rear tires on cast wheels with steel wheels as an option. No mention
of 36" rears.

I've never fully trusted this manual for the 39 & 40 models due to its broad
serial number coverage and it totally ignores the uniqueness of the 1939 and
1940 models, especially the Slant Dash features.

Hopefully someone will join in here and add additional info.

There was an original 6 x 9" Green and Grey Operators manual for the B's
starting at Ser no 60,000 on eBay recently but it went for such a high price
I had to pass on it. And I didn't know if it really was any different than
the manual I have now. There are so many details about these tractors and
their associated documentation that I just don't know how one can ever say
they now have collected all that was published.

Dean,

Yes, I still have the front tires and rims.
however, they tires are so rotten you can;t read
anything on them. This is the B I got from Dave. It
also has 38" rears and I thought that if you had the
15 inch fronts you needed 36 in rears. Anyway it
doesn't really matter that much, I just wanted to try
and have the correct tire size on it, one less thing
for people to chip at when selling a tractor.. not
that it is for sale, I just don't see me keeping this
one forever...
