Spencer's correct about the auctionstealer (and others similar to it) program.
I myself have never got around to doing it. If it's an item I absolutely need then I make 100% 
certain I am at the computer, go to the item, hit CONTROL N which opens up an identical window, 
enter my last desperate bid amount so all that's left is to hit the bid button, and count the 
auction down on the other window. Works okay for me. If I get it, great. If not, there'll 
always be another one along in the next 2-3 years....maybe.....lol
