[AT] John Deere parts wanted

Dean,

There are a few different places reproducing grilles. I have used ones that
have to be tweaked a little, and there have been others that fit really
nice. The best ones are not made anymore. They were for a model B tractor.
They were marketed by a guy from Kentucky. He had dies made, and they were
stamped by a company that stamped metal for the Big Three. The company was
sold to a Canadian firm. They melted the dies down, so no more hoods or
grilles from that supplier.

Lou:

Sorry, I keep forgetting about those on the list that are selling
reproduction parts. I've not seen any of the repro grills for the H but the
scuttlebutt at the local shows around here is that the reproduction grills
don't fit very well. I have no first hand experience but the warning always
pops up when repro grills are discussed out here. I don't know if it is pure
rumor or actual fact. Maybe they don't survive the long distance shipping!
:-)

I am curious though, is the same vendor making all the various reproduction
grills on the market? Grills are a long ways from being the easiest thing to
reproduce. Lots of different formed portions, bends and folds. It does not
surprise me they are priced at nearly $200 a side. After trying to get all
the damage removed from a few grills,I have, $200 isn't out of line in
comparison.

We have a guy out here that forms the bars for JD grills and then one just
cuts out the old bars and welds the new ones back in. Properly done it is
hard to see the difference. He hasn't gone into business selling the bars
yet. Not sure he can make them at a price that makes sense considering each
bar has to be welded in. I suspect the breakeven point is dictated by how
many bars need to be replaced. Time will tell. My tin welding skills are
such that I won't even tackle it.

Joel,

I can get reproduction grilles with screens, from one of my suppliers. They
are $195 per side. I can also get radiator caps, they are $22.50.

I need front grills for my Dads John Deere H project. Also a radiator cap.
Have tried some local sources and am now turning to all of you. A little
history if interested. This is an H my great grandad had. Has a buzz saw
mounted to it, and was used to saw all firewood back in the day in
Wisconsin, cultivate(Dad remembers how long it took to adjust width of
rears, guess it shortened tempers in an otherwise easy going family) <G> and
used to pull the manure spreader. He now has this tractor in Oregon and is
having it restored by a neighbor. I would appreciate any parts available or
any leads and or sources for these parts.

          Thanks
