[Farmall] Steering wheel repair

I saw the thread but was too busy to chime in at the time. I think you made the right choice. I have repaired a number of them using JB Weld and PC7. The main reason I don't but the reproductions is that I don't think they look or feel close enough to the originals. I've repaired more than one where the plastic was actually missing for a couple of inches. Yes, a lot of work, especially filing in all of the finger ridges on the underside and recreating the part that extends onto the spokes.

Thought I would respond with my decision on the steering wheel since I
originally brought up the question.  First of, I enjoyed the lively
discussion.  People always seem to debate well without getting personal.

Anyway I went with the PC7 approach.  One reason is that I was impatient
to get started and it was the early favorite with responses.  It molded
well, stayed in place and sanded easily.  I was very pleased with the
outcome.  You have to look closely to know just how much repair was
done.  Of course we will have to wait and see how well it holds up but
since I plan on keeping the tractor out of the sun most of the time, I
think it should last for quite some time.

Now would buying a new one have been better?  Maybe, especially if it
was a work tractor getting lots of use.  I probably have about $20 in
PC7 and paint or about half the cost of a new one (with shipping) so $$
is not the main issue.  I just like the challenge of seeing if I can fix
up the old stuff to look like new.

Like I said, eBay has about 25 or 30 new ones. Why mess with trying to
repair and be disappointed with your results experimenting when you can
have a brand new one? Below is just one sample. They usually sell for
around $35 and they are always there.

by the way I use a modified pitman arm puller from
Harbor Freight to pull the wheels. once modified by
grinding the gap to the correct side to work with the
shaft most IH and Ford Steering wheels are a snap.
Heat and whatever rust formula may be necessary.
