A headline in this morning's paper describes a hay ride in South
Carolina that got hit by a semi. The tractor was a big John Deere with
an enclosed cab and lights everywhere, but the trailer had no lights.
Four dead.

Be carefull out there
20 miles east of here Sunday, a family was having a Halloween hayride
riding on a utility trailer behind a tractor. They pulled out of a
county road onto a state highway and were rear ended by a small compact
car. Five on the trailer were in critical condition as they were thrown
free. Most of the children and infants were hurt but released as they
were on the front of the trailer. The wife of the tractor owner/driver
is not expected to live. No lights or SMV emblem on the combination.
The car driver was only slightly injured. Impact at 65 mph.

A few years ago a local school borried a tractor and trailer and had 2
classrooms of 5th graders on board with no adult supervision. The
driver had never driven a tractor or pulled a trailer before. One boy
fell off and was ran over by both axles. He was in the hospital and
rehab for over 18 months. The legal battles are still going on today.
My wife uses hayride trailers at the Outdoor Learning Center where she
teaches, but they have high sides with expanded metal and a let down
tailgate that accomodates wheel chairs. They are also never allowed on
even a county road.

Where can I find a photo of a loaded hayrack where the hay was touching
the ground on all sides of the hayrack? The first time I saw such
photo was in Life or Look magazine an estimated fifty years ago.
We are having a family hayrack ride this evening and I wanted to provide
some history primarily for the grandchildren. Wish I had thought of
this sooner.
TIA, Herb
