[AJD] Deluxe fender question

Don:

Ok, you are on top of the light issues. I understand your satisfaction with
the 630's pulling performance. I haven't pulled my 1958 620 because it
didn't have good tires. I now have new 42" 23 degree lug tires to put on it.
I'm very curious how the 12.4 x 42" tires are going to perform in pulling
situations. I suspect they are going to be too narrow. But there are no
wider 42" sized tires available, that I am aware of, and they weren't used
on the 620 in the 50's anyway. A 42" tire should give me a slight increase
in footprint though over a 38" tire.

But I have pulled my 60 and it has blown away some heavy competition on a
good hard track pulling in the 6,000 lb class. On a hard track I pull in
Creeper Gear, 1st, (Slow....) and have never run out of power. Always run
out of traction first. In second gear, on a hard track, I run out of power
before traction. Amazingly there isn't that much difference in distance. But
1st gear has the edge and I don't like pulling the engine down to a stall. I
can't duck flying piston rods and crank pieces as fast as I used to! :-)
I'm working on a solution to the second gear power problem though.
Shhhh.... Also working on shifting more of the weight to the front end and
still stay in the under 6,000 class. I've had a really hard time keeping the
front end down in the past. Just a few pounds up front really helps.

I got my wife into pulling because I gained enough weight that I couldn't
meet the 2500 lb limit on the JD H anymore. I may just get her to drive the
60 too so I can put more weight on the front. She has learned a lot on how
to drive in pulling situations and won way more first place ribbons than I
have. This is good. Better than me I think. However, guys don't like to get
beat by a woman. Especially a near greatgrandma. Tough! :-)

I have no idea yet what weight class the 1958 620 with WFE is going to fit
in. I suspect I might have trouble staying under 7,000 lbs with it. I'll
never get it under 6,000 with a WFE and a three point hitch. If I find that
it is a respectable competitor I might get really serious and go to a single
wheel front end and remove the three point hitch. I'm curious how much it
might weigh then. Still don't think I'll be able to get it under 6,000 lbs.
I won't strip a tractor any more than that. I don't cut tires either. Either
the sucker is competitive in a normal working configuration or it gets
delegated to shows only. What weight class are you pulling your 630 in?

I have not moved the pole lights yet. On the fender, the existing light has
the fastening bolt on the back of the light, the same as my pole lights.
I'm thinking all I need to do is to drill a hole in the center of where the
second light is to be mounted. I'll get the wiring diagram from the
manuals. If I ever get around to repainting my 630WFE, I'll have the right
hand hold filled in. The 630 has most of the options except the dual
hydraulics. It's a real good pulling tractor, at the pulls it pulls with
the JD R's.

Don:

Thanks for the help. I seem to recall that both fenders had the hand grip in
them. It is hard to discern in the pictures I took. The more I learn about
these fenders, I'm getting cold feet about putting them on a 20 Series
tractor. I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling about the look and they really
look better to me on a 30 series tractor with the rounded tin to match.
Probably would drive the "Correct Police" into convulsions if they were on a
20 Series. Might just be worth it though! :-)

You mention using the lights off of the poles for these deluxe fenders. I
got the early impression from the parts catalog that the lights were
different that the normal bullet lights. The cavity where they mount, in the
fenders, looked more rounded and shallower than what I thought a normal
bullet light would fit in. I better do some more research and compare some
part numbers.

Looks like my fantasy of putting Deluxe fenders on a 20 series is not one of
the best ideas I have had recently. :-) Win some, lose some!

It's my understanding to be a pure 30 series flat top fender, the right
fender will not have a hand hold. The later flat top fenders have hand
holds in both right and left fenders. I purchased a set for my 630WFE, they
have hand holds in both fenders. I sorry I can't help with the cost
estimate, as mine had a light in each fender and the other two lights will
come from my pole lights on the tractor.

I have an opportunity to make trade for a pair of original 30 series deluxe
fenders. I think they are 30 series fenders, maybe they are NG fenders.
Hmmm. Need to find some pictures. They are in pretty good shape except all 4
lights are missing and of course all the wiring. Is there anyone on the list
who has restored a set of these who is willing to give me an estimate of
what it's going to cost to add the lights and wiring? All the tin is in
pretty good shape with one minor wrinkle that I think is going to be fairly
easy to hide. Not rusted out anywhere that I was able to find in a cursory
inspection.

As I recall the deluxe fenders first arrived with the 30 series but were
then offered to be dealer installed on the 20 series too. Is my memory
serving me well? I've only seen one 20 series tractor with deluxe fenders on
it and it looked a bit odd to me but I assumed it was because I hadn't seen
them mounted on a 20 series before. Or at least didn't remember seeing that
before.

These fenders are presently mounted on a JD 50. These looked even more odd
to me. Here are some quick pictures of the fenders on the 50. I also found
some archived pictures of a 620 with these deluxe fenders on it. I included
a few of those pictures too. They still look a bit odd to me on a 20 series:

I have a set of the earlier clamshell fenders but I don't have a very good
opinion of those. I'm not entirely sure what purpose they were intended to
serve. I guess it may have slowed down an operator if he fell towards a rear
wheel. I'm not sure the fenders even slowed down anything being thrown off a
rear tire. Must have been designed to satisfy Michigan's state law requiring
fenders on all tractors during that era. :-)
