The book I've been using for reference on serial numbers is a JD publication
entitled simply John Deere Tractors 1918-1976. Brown cover paperback, I
think I read a while back that John Deere did a second printing of this.
Mine is from the first batch. It contains a drawing or picture of each
model covered, a brief paragraph about it, and in the back has a listing of
serial numbers and model years. I took this with me to auction sales for a
few seasons, when it looked like there would be nothing selling I cared
about for a bit I would go back to the van and enter the serial numbers into
my palm pilot. So I have an ascii file of the serial numbers and years for
all the letter series tractors and for model E engines. If anyone would
like a copy of this text file just ask and I'll forward it to you. I find
no copyright in the book, so this is even legit as far as I'm concered.

It's handy having this info with me at a sale, I can look up a tractor.
Especially fun listening to other experts state what the tractor is, many
are way off and with great certainty. I just keep quiet, I figure this is
my secret weapon at a sale to know what it is that I'm bidding on...or not!

As far as the model vs production year, I think I read a while back that my
book is indeed calendar year. As Michael posted, for restoration purposes
and getting the tractor "right" the serial number and the parts book is what
is helpful, never mind the actual year.

Been barely able to lurk the past couple of days, to say nothing of having a
thought left over for posting. Got the son married off on Friday, company
is dwindling away, 2 more trips to the airport today and tomorrow and life
will return to normal. It's been a great weekend with the new daughter in
law coming aboard and having folks around we've not seen for a while. But
company is like fish, after about 3 days... Looks like I'll be eating
potato salad for a month.
