[AT] OT - Disk cloning software

Mike:

I don't know how to answer your questions because I would need to know what
your current hard drive controller is capable of handling. But I can offer
advice on one portion, the RPM speeds you are mentioning; 5400, 7200 and
10,000 RPM indicate how fast the platters are spinning in the disk. Faster
equal faster access to data and usually faster data transfer speeds. But for
you application of a back up disk I would recommend buying whatever is the
least expensive. Slower may add a little time to your back up time but it
won't be significant.

But I would like to suggest again what others have suggested. Why not get a
drive that connects to your USB port or parallel port or any one of the
standard ports that you have on your system. The all you need to worry about
is having the cable to plug into that port, install and you are ready to go.
You can then use that external drive to connect to any other system as well.

OK,
It seems that buying a new drive is the way to go. However when I look at
tigerdirect, ect it seems to get more confusing. I get IDE ATA all these
different types; what is it that I need. Also at tigerdirect, I noticed that
a lot of the drives came w/o software and cables. Then there's 5400, 7200
and 10,000 rpm. Which is the way to go. I appreciate the advice because I'm
not sure the best route to take, thanks to the internet, TMI.

Regards,
Mike

Both of my son's are in the computer business and they recommend Seagate
when it comes to hard drives. 5 year warranty. They use Western Digital for
the (sata) 10K RPM drives only because WD is the only company making them.

o They are priced right
o They include the clone software
o They are in all the stores.

While Western Digital may not be the absolute best they are generally
good enough.

There are many good brands. Segate is probably one of the best. They
have retail packages that include the software you need.

IBM now Hitachi is the most advanced but they are generally sold as OEM
devices with no software.

I purchased my Western Digital from SAM's Club. You know SAM's though
they may or may not have any drives in stock.

drive and just being able to copy the contents of the old to the new. Is
there anything that I need to watch out for when buying a new drive, such as
compatability with the drivers or cards on her system? I notice that most if
not all recommend Western Digital, is that there a reason for that?
