[AJD] Deluxe fender question

Don:

Thanks for the help. I seem to recall that both fenders had the hand grip in
them. It is hard to discern in the pictures I took. The more I learn about
these fenders, I'm getting cold feet about putting them on a 20 Series
tractor. I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling about the look and they really
look better to me on a 30 series tractor with the rounded tin to match.
Probably would drive the "Correct Police" into convulsions if they were on a
20 Series. Might just be worth it though! :-)

You mention using the lights off of the poles for these deluxe fenders. I
got the early impression from the parts catalog that the lights were
different that the normal bullet lights. The cavity where they mount, in the
fenders, looked more rounded and shallower than what I thought a normal
bullet light would fit in. I better do some more research and compare some
part numbers.

Looks like my fantasy of putting Deluxe fenders on a 20 series is not one of
the best ideas I have had recently. :-) Win some, lose some!

Dean
It's my understanding to be a pure 30 series flat top fender, the right
fender will not have a hand hold. The later flat top fenders have hand
holds in both right and left fenders. I purchased a set for my 630WFE, they
have hand holds in both fenders. I sorry I can't help with the cost
estimate, as mine had a light in each fender and the other two lights will
come from my pole lights on the tractor.

I have an opportunity to make trade for a pair of original 30 series deluxe
fenders. I think they are 30 series fenders, maybe they are NG fenders.
Hmmm. Need to find some pictures. They are in pretty good shape except all 4
lights are missing and of course all the wiring. Is there anyone on the list
who has restored a set of these who is willing to give me an estimate of
what it's going to cost to add the lights and wiring? All the tin is in
pretty good shape with one minor wrinkle that I think is going to be fairly
easy to hide. Not rusted out anywhere that I was able to find in a cursory
inspection.

As I recall the deluxe fenders first arrived with the 30 series but were
then offered to be dealer installed on the 20 series too. Is my memory
serving me well? I've only seen one 20 series tractor with deluxe fenders on
it and it looked a bit odd to me but I assumed it was because I hadn't seen
them mounted on a 20 series before. Or at least didn't remember seeing that
before.

These fenders are presently mounted on a JD 50. These looked even more odd
to me. Here are some quick pictures of the fenders on the 50. I also found
some archived pictures of a 620 with these deluxe fenders on it. I included
a few of those pictures too. They still look a bit odd to me on a 20 series:

I have a set of the earlier clamshell fenders but I don't have a very good
opinion of those. I'm not entirely sure what purpose they were intended to
serve. I guess it may have slowed down an operator if he fell towards a rear
wheel. I'm not sure the fenders even slowed down anything being thrown off a
rear tire. Must have been designed to satisfy Michigan's state law requiring
fenders on all tractors during that era. :-)
