For some reason or other this reminds me of a story a friend told on
himself---He needed a left hand threaded rod.  his solution was to run a die
the full length of the piece of rod (right hand thread) his thought was that
the thread would magically change when the die went off the other end. 

Wonder what the mechanical world would be if this trick worked ????

But if you do that have a nut on the rod that you can twist over the cut
area to make it easier to use.
