The Buckeye Steam Engine that our club removed last year from Milwaukee
Solvay Coke Co's former grounds is now setting on its new foundation. I
was at the Badger Steam and Gas Engine Club Swap Meet yesterday, when I
got a call to see if I could come and take some photos on the move from
outside to inside the building. I got there is time to see the riggers
getting everything set to load the engine on a semi-trailer to make the
move from behind our steam building inside the building. My son met me
there, and I was told he would take the photos and I would be a better
help running some of the equipment. So I was put to work helping lay the
engine down and load it on the tractor trailer. We got the trailer
backed into our front door and the head rigger put me on the fork lift
we used to move the engine to its base. This was not a run of the mill
fork lift. I had 32,000lbs hanging off the front of it.Heavy duty to say
the least. I spent the next three hours in the seat of that thing moving
setting, moving and setting again. With the help of a 75 ton crane,
through a hole that was opened in the roof, the engine back up we had it
on it's is new base at about 2:30pm. This was all done in a one piece
move except flywheel and platform, which is next weekends project. Then
plumb it and get the oiling system back on it. and hopefully it will be
back and running for our show. The original plan was to split the
engine, but this worked far better. Thanks to the help of some very
professional riggers and movers from J&W Transfer out of Janesville
Wisc. Very impressive to see this 18 ft tall machine extending into the
upper reaches of the building.
