[Farmall] lets talk Farmalls

I have both a Super C and a Farmall 340. I have not operated a 240, but
if a 240 is largely an upgrade with new sheet metal of the Super C, then I
do have some comparison. I do not use them a lot but have been fine with
both. Probably all depends on what you want to use them for. The Farmall
340 is a heavier duty tractor and has a loader on it. It also has, as
Mike indicated, live PTO and the torque amplifier and probably heavier
duty hydraulics than the Super C. The hydraulics on both are slower and
less powerful than new tractors...in my estimation.
The 340 handles my 60" bushhog generally just fine---just a little slower
in heavier stuff than the 400 propane I used ot have. The Super C has a
rear fast hitch blade and a front blade, and I have been pleasantly
surprised just how much snow it will push but there is a noticable
difference in power between the two. The touch control and the fast hitch
are handy. Whether it is my tractors or not (and the 340 has been
overhauled), but there is a quite a difference in the horsepower, pulling
capacity, etc., between the Super C and the 340. I think only about
7,000+ 340s were made (both Farmalls and International) and more than
90,000 Super C's, so there may some parts and sheet metal harder to find
for the 340. For an all around utility tractor of a little heavier duty,
I have always wondered about an International 300, 350 or 460 as a
possibility.
I got some 00 welding cable and used it for my battery cable and it helped
considerably in getting both the Super C and the Farmall 340 in starting.
Just my 2 cents.

Actually, the 340 isn't all that much larger than the 240 (although over
1000 lbs heavier), and certainly smaller than the H. But the 340 has
everything the 240 lacks - 5 speed transmission plus TA, live PTO,
(optional) power steering, 5 more hp, etc. It still has a 6 volt
electrical system, and they moved the battery to behind the seat, which
is good for getting on and off the tractor but bad for having a very
long cable to the starter solenoid. I am very sorely tempted to convert
mine to 12 volts for that reason. I will send you an image off-line of
my 140, 240, and 340 sitting side by side for comparison.
I do some brush mowing with my 240, and the non-live PTO isn't all that
much of a problem, but I prefer using the 340. (My 240 is an industrial
and can get under trees better than the 340 row crop.)
