[AT] anybody close to this?

Of course, I'm not Charlie but I have traveled the I-40 link between NC
and TN several times by car and this is my take on things.
One other way to go is to take I-40 West to I-77 North to I-81 West and
then to I-40 west of the moutain passes. This does avoid the I-40
mountain passes but subtitutes the I-77 passes in southern VA for them.
Having driven both (but not while pulling a trailer) the I-77 passes
seem to be a little easier to get through. Either way, watch out for
high wind days (especially on the I-77 route). Winds seem to funnel
through the moutain passes and I hear of several overturned trucks on
the I-77 path every Spring (I live near there).
Another thing to consider is that repairs on the I-40 stretch near the
TN border in NC are still ongoing. This is to fix the damage from the
storms of last fall - I think one lane is still closed.
Also, you could take I-85 to Atlanta then go north on I-75 to
Chattanooga then to I-40 West. This isn't a route I would recommend -
my thought is to stay away from the Atlanta traffic at all costs and
besides it is a mjor detour timewise.
So, I guess you can pick your poison.
