[AJD] JD Manual scans on CD

Dean,

I have to say it has bothered me also. I think this; first it is not
right to copy other peoples work without permission, second it runs down
the value of legitimate copies. I think this same person is also coping
DB1293 and selling it on Ebay. I really haven't heard any complaint
about that, while I was selling legitmate vintage equipment Deere CD's I
got flamed. I was accused of them being copies, while they are not. I
won't do that, I have enough problems without Deere's lawyers breathing
down my neck.

I have been collecting Field Service Bulletins. I was thinking of
scanning them, putting them on CD's and selling them. They do not have
any type of copyright marking on them. I contacted Deere about this
venture, looking for their blessing. I asked if I was allowed to do
this and if I had to buy a license. I was thinking there wouldn't be a
problem since reprints are not available from Deere. Well, Ma Deere
wrote back to me and declined permission. This is copied from the email
they sent to me:

>Lou, although service bulletins may not always include John Deere
copyright >statement, these are protected John Deere printed
materials.
>We request you do not reproduce in CD-ROM for resale.
>
>Regards, Technical Information Services Department-
>Deere & Co. World Headquarters
>Moline, IL.

Since then I have spoke with Greg. He thinks that Two-Cylinder is
working on that project. That is fine. There is a lot of work in
scanning all of those bulletins.

Lou

Subject: [AJD] JD Manual scans on CD

Well, I wondered how long it was going to take before someone tried
this. Seller on eBay has scanned JD's Paper manuals and is now selling
them on eBay. Seller has 4 different scanned CD's on now.

Look at eBay auction: 3879451357

Then click on "All Items for sale by this seller"

I have mixed emotions about this. At one time I was told that JD's paper
manuals are not copyrighted. If that is true then I see no reason why
this is illegal unless JD already has the same manual on CD this is
copyrighted. But..... JD still sells these CD versions of the paper
manuals on a custom basis. I've not purchased one of the current custom
CD's from JD so I don't know if their custom CD's are copyrighted or
not.

I have mixed emotions about this practice. Something tells me it is
unethical and maybe even illegal. But JD sure has created a price
umbrella to entice this underground cottage industry.

What do you guys think?
